Travel medical insurance vs. trip cancellation insurance

Medical treatment and canceled travel bookings are different expenses. Check the benefits in the policy—not just the words “travel insurance” on the label.

Updated

What is the main difference?

Travel medical insurance addresses eligible medical expenses during a trip. Trip cancellation insurance addresses eligible prepaid travel costs when you cancel for a covered reason. Some policies combine benefits. The U.S. Department of State distinguishes these insurance types and notes that cancellation insurance usually does not pay overseas medical bills. Read its insurance overview.

QuestionTravel medicalTrip cancellation
What expense is the focus?Eligible healthcare costs while traveling.Eligible prepaid, nonrefundable trip costs.
What example should I ask about? An unexpected illness requiring treatment abroad. An illness that causes you to cancel before departure.
What should I check?Medical limits, deductibles, exclusions, and claim procedures.Covered cancellation reasons, insured trip costs, deadlines, and exclusions.

This table describes general purposes. The purchased policy determines coverage.

Three situations to discuss before buying

You need a clinic during your vacation

Ask the provider whether the medical benefit applies, what you would pay, and how to submit a claim. Ask separately about assistance finding care.

You become ill before departure

Ask whether cancellation due to your circumstances is a covered reason and what evidence would be required. A medical benefit for treatment during a trip does not itself answer that question.

You need to cut a trip short

Ask about trip interruption, transportation expenses, and any medical benefits separately. Request the exact policy sections rather than assuming that a cancellation benefit applies after departure.

These examples are questions to take to an insurer, not predictions about claim approval.

How to decide what to review

Start with two amounts: the nonrefundable travel money you have committed, and the medical costs you could be responsible for under your existing health plan. The second amount may be unclear until you ask your insurer; use our overseas health coverage checklist.

Then ask each provider to identify which expenses its proposed policy addresses. If you are considering more than one policy, ask how the benefits coordinate. Include any credit-card travel benefits in the discussion, using the card’s current benefit documents.
